Grace & Mark - A Canberra Wedding At Lake George Winery

It’s been six months since Amy and I moved to Canberra, and during that time I’ve come to realise that short, weekday weddings are really popular here, having received several enquiries for just an hour of photography to cover the ceremony and some family photos.

Grace and Mark were one of those enquiries and I jumped at the chance to shoot their small wedding last Friday, partly because they sounded like my perfect couple (big Brooklyn Nine Nine fans!) and also because their wedding would be at the gorgeous Lake George Winery.

Sneak Peeks: Amy and Nikky's Paddington Town Hall Wedding

What do you get if you take a gorgeous couple who met through Tinder, some super cute kiddies, a tea ceremony, a champagne tower, a surprise lion dance, and a spot of crowd surfing to The White Tree Band and and mix them together in a heritage-listed building on a beautiful autumn day, AND THEN throw in an invitation to a random stranger’s rooftop at sunset? You get Amy and Nikky’s epic Paddington Town Hall wedding of course, DUH!

Sneak Peeks: Maha and Matt's Sydney wedding at Captain Henry Waterhouse Reserve and Aqua Dining

When close friends ask us to shoot their wedding there’s always a dilemma. It is, of course, an absolute privilege to capture your pals having their best day ever, but with that comes the FOMO of being a guest and all the fun that comes with that role. Fortunately Maha and Matthew had their wedding strategy down pat. A short, intimate harbourside wedding with family was followed a couple of days later with a cocktail party for friends, which meant that Amy and I got to enjoy the best of both worlds :)

Sneak Peeks: Elle and Ryan's Enzo Wedding at Ironbark Hill Vineyard, Hunter Valley

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it a thousand times more: Filipino weddings are so much fun! It doesn’t matter where the wedding takes place or how many people attend, we always know our faces will be aching from smiling and laughing all day long. A nice venue does, of course, help to set the scene for a fantastic day and the lovely Elle and Ryan invited their guests to join them at Ironbark Hill Vineyard in the Hunter Valley. With both a chapel and spectacular reception venue on site amongst the vines it was the perfect location for a summer wedding. Dancing is always a big part of Filipino weddings and Elle and Ryan certainly knew how to showcase their skills! They entered the reception from opposite ends of the room as “I’ve had the time of my life” started to play and met on the dancefloor where they wowed everyone with a full on dance routine. And, of course, after the bridal waltz the dance floor was heaving late into the night.

2018 In Review

It’s been a particularly exciting and busy year for Amy and myself. Never ones to sit still we entered 2018 with a couple of new ventures in mind that would require a fair amount of time to bring to life, so we set ourselves a target / limit of thirty weddings which we comfortably achieved. As usual many of our bookings came from word or mouth, referrals and testimonials so thank you to all our clients, followers, industry brethren and friends who put in a good word for us!

Sneak Peeks: Courtney and Nash's Bendooley Estate, Southern Highlands Wedding

This was a wedding about resilience and perseverance. It’s often said that the only thing you can’t control on your wedding day is the weather and for Courtney and Nash the weather was their foil on Saturday at Bendooley Estate. I’d been watching the weather forecast all week, and on the day itself I was keeping an eye on the radar map every hour. The forecast had been heavy rain and a high likelihood of a thunderstorm but as we approached the ceremony time with no sign of the wet stuff heading our way the positive vibes started flowing that we would get through the ceremony unscathed. And we almost did.

Sneak Peeks: Mercedes and Oliver's Bendooley Estate, Southern Highlands Wedding

We’re always excited to visit Bendooley Estate in the southern highlands, but after skyping with the effervescent Hong Kong based Mercedes we knew this wedding would be especially memorable. Initially one of the highlights was going to be meeting Mercedes’ Academy Award winning aunt who she was named after but due to Broadway commitments Mercedes snr had to Facetime into the ceremony instead. Despite this minor setback we loved the way Mercedes and Oliver surprised two of their family members by asking them to be their witnesses, and with The White Tree Band providing the music and entertainment a packed dance floor was never going to be in doubt.

Sneak Peeks: Eloise and Ryan's Esca Bimbadgen, Hunter Valley Wedding

Bimbadgen Estate in the Hunter Valley has always had a special place in my heart. After sampling their fantastic produce during a wine tour I signed up as a member and enjoyed receiving their care parcels for several years. I also saw one of my Motown heros Lionel Richie perform there back in 2011. So I was especially excited to return to Bimbadgen to shoot my first wedding at their restaurant, Esca.
