GOLD AWARD: "RED STRIPE"

At precisely this time last week I was experiencing a rather eclectic mix of exhaustion, elation, excitement and nervousness. Day one of the 2015 AIPP NSW/ACT Epson Professional Photography Awards was completed, and as the NSW President of the AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photography) I found myself in the interesting position of being an organiser, entrant, panel chair and judge! As such I was shattered from running around The Muse gallery at Sydney TAFE in Ultimo, making sure the day went smoothly. But I was also excited that three of the four images I entered into the Wedding category won silver awards while the fourth image scored a 79, just one point shy of a silver! This was my best result to date at the state's most prestigious professional photography competition, but it wasn't over yet.

Day two would be another full day of judging and the last category on the schedule was Travel where I had entered another four prints. One of the prints "Red Stripe" was a unique shot taken from the heights of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. I had a good feeling when I captured it and had high hopes for a strong score. In fact I felt it had the potential to win my first gold award (meaning a score of 90+ out of 100). I didn't want to get ahead of myself but the night was spent dreaming about that elusive first gold award.

After a long day the Travel category finally started and after a couple of hours three of my prints had produced a similar result to day one: two silvers and a 79. There was just one print left: Red Stripe. There's actually a long and amusing story about what happened when Red Stripe was judged (which is best told over a cold beer or you can watch the livestream replay here and skip to 02:09:35) but the long and short of it is that it won gold!

That brought my total haul to a gold, five silvers and two 79s. It was my best result ever and has given me a lot of confidence going into preparations for APPA, the Australian Professional Photography Awards which will take place in Melbourne in October.

Thank you to my NSW council, the national team, Epson and all the volunteers, panel chairs, judges and entrants without whom we would not have one of the finest professional photography competitions in the world.
